Post-Operative Pregnancy MLD
Gentle healing support after birth surgery.
Whether you’ve had a cesarean section, perineal repair, or another surgical intervention during pregnancy or postpartum, your body deserves care and support during recovery. Post-Operative Pregnancy Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy designed to help reduce swelling, ease discomfort, and promote healing in the early stages of postpartum recovery.
What Is Post-Op Pregnancy MLD?
After delivery—especially surgical birth—your body may retain fluid, experience inflammation, and feel sore or congested. Post-op MLD helps:
-
Reduce post-surgical swelling and fluid retention
-
Support tissue healing by improving circulation and lymphatic flow
-
Minimize bruising and scar formation
-
Ease discomfort in the abdomen, legs, and arms
-
Support emotional and physical relaxation in the postpartum period
MLD is safe when performed by a trained therapist and adapted for postpartum bodies—including breastfeeding and post-cesarean clients.
Why Consider Post-Op MLD After Cesarean or Birth Surgery?
During postpartum recovery, especially after a C-section or other procedure, MLD can be a gentle way to:
-
Accelerate healing
-
Reduce abdominal swelling or puffiness
-
Decrease scar tissue buildup or tightness
-
Help manage postpartum edema (swelling in hands, feet, legs)
-
Relieve tenderness from IV sites, spinal blocks, or post-surgical inflammation
Many new mothers find it comforting, grounding, and a much-needed moment of care during the busy postpartum period.
Contraindications: When to Wait or Avoid Post-Op MLD
Even though MLD is very gentle, there are certain conditions that may require you to delay or avoid treatment:
-
Active infection or fever
-
Severe anemia or blood clot risk
-
Unhealed surgical wounds or drainage sites
-
Uncontrolled hypertension
-
Postpartum hemorrhage or retained placenta
-
Signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (e.g., redness, swelling, warmth in the leg)
-
Not yet cleared by your medical provider
Always get clearance from your OB-GYN, midwife, or surgeon before scheduling a post-op MLD session—especially if you're still in the hospital or early stages of recovery.
When Can I Start Post-Op Pregnancy MLD?
This depends on the type of surgery, how your body is healing, and your provider's guidance. As a general guideline:
-
After C-section: Usually safe to begin 10–14 days post-surgery, once incision is healing and you're cleared
-
For general postpartum swelling: Can often begin sooner, as long as no medical complications exist
-
Ongoing care: Weekly or biweekly sessions may be recommended during recovery, depending on needs
Sessions typically last 30–60 minutes and can provide immediate relief from heaviness, puffiness, or tightness.
What to Expect During Post-Op Pregnancy MLD
We understand that postpartum recovery—especially after surgery—can be overwhelming. That’s why Post-Operative MLD sessions are designed to be gentle, comforting, and tailored to your healing body.
Post-op pregnancy MLD is performed in a side-lying or semi-reclined position for comfort and safety. Your therapist will use gentle, rhythmic strokes to help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and support healing—without putting pressure on incision sites.
Sessions last 30–60 minutes, and are always adjusted based on your stage of healing, comfort level, and medical clearance. Many new mothers find it not only physically relieving, but also emotionally grounding during the early postpartum period.
Your Body Deserves Support
Birth—whether vaginal or surgical—is a profound experience. Post-operative MLD offers a safe, supportive, and nurturing way to help your body heal and feel more balanced during the postpartum period.
