Pre-Operative Pregnancy MLD

If you're already familiar with Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), you know it's a light-touch therapy designed to stimulate the lymphatic system. When applied before a planned surgical birth—such as a cesarean section—Pre-Op Pregnancy MLD can help prepare your body for a smoother procedure and recovery.

Pre-operative MLD during pregnancy focuses on preparing the body for surgery by:

  • Reducing fluid retention and swelling, especially in the legs, feet, and hands

  • Supporting immune function to reduce the risk of infection post-surgery

  • Encouraging calm and relaxation for both mother and baby

  • Improving circulation, which can support healing after childbirth

This gentle, non-invasive treatment is performed by a therapist trained in both MLD and pregnancy-safe techniques.

Why Consider Pre-Op MLD Before a Cesarean or Other Procedure?

Pregnancy already places extra strain on the lymphatic system due to hormonal changes and increased fluid volume. When surgery is added to the mix, your body may benefit from:

  • Reduced pre-existing swelling

  • Better tissue health to minimize bruising or scar formation

  • Improved post-op recovery

  • More comfortable pregnancy experience overall

Contraindications: When Pre-Op MLD During Pregnancy May Not Be Advised

Pregnancy already places extra strain on the lymphatic system due to hormonal changes and increased fluid volume. When surgery is added to the mix, your body may benefit from:

  • High-risk pregnancies (unless cleared by your OB/midwife)

  • Pre-eclampsia or eclampsia

  • Placenta previa or placental abruption

  • Active infection or fever

  • Uncontrolled blood pressure

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • Signs of premature labor

Always consult with your OB-GYN, midwife, or perinatal care provider before scheduling a session.

When to Schedule Pre-Op Pregnancy MLD?

Timing is key for safety and effectiveness. Generally:

  • Best to schedule 1–3 days prior to your planned surgical date

  • Can be part of a regular prenatal care plan in the third trimester

  • Must be cleared by your medical provider

I  will customize the session based on your gestational age, symptoms, and surgical timeline.

What to Expect:

You’ll lie in a side-lying or semi-reclined position to ensure comfort and safety. Your therapist will use slow, rhythmic, and very light strokes to guide lymphatic flow—especially in areas prone to swelling during pregnancy like the ankles, thighs, arms, and abdomen.

Sessions are deeply relaxing and usually last 30–60 minutes—However your first session will start out at 15 minutes to see if you are able to tolerate the therapy.
